How Mobile Broadband Services Work

The internet has grown to be such an interesting distraction that has fully entered into our day-to-day lives. Nowadays, we cannot go for more than an hour without checking the email. When we have something that we need to know or when we need more information on something we pop open, the web browser and we start to Google for whatever we want. Our work place is not left out either as it is all about videoconferencing, online CTM tools and the corporate Intranet. While we are at home, everything is about YouTube, Limewire and constantly updating out facebook page.

The only way to access all of these tools is through a mobile broadband (high-speed) internet connection which has become part of our lives. According to statistics that were carried out in 2007, over 70 per cent of internet users, mainly adults have mobile broadband at their homes. When we are in the move, we can as well access the internet with the help of mobile broadband. While we are moving around, we still have the same thirst of internet-based information, entertainment or communication according to a survey. Pew Internet & American Life Project conducted a survey in 2008and conclude that 58 per cent of all Americans have in one way or another used a mobile phone or PDA for activities that is not for voice calling such as recording a video or sending an email. The report also found out that 41 percent of all Americans have used a WiFi-enabled computer or any other mobile device in accessing the internet while he/she is away from home or in an office.

Mobile access to internet was improved recently such that if you have a WiFi-enabled laptop or any other device that can be moved around, it is possible for you to check emails or surf the web in some of the designated places like coffee shops, airports, bookstores and some other areas. With the mobile broadband, you can use a WAP-enabled mobile phone. WAP in this case stands for Wireless Application Protocol and is the universal standard that is used with all wireless devices for communications. With the mobile broadband, several manufacturers of cell phones have come up with various makes of cell phones that are WAP-enabled and thus customers are able to access the internet wherever they are and whenever they want.

One can buy an iPhone, Blackberry or any other smartphone and he/she is ready to serf some special WAP web sites. One disadvantage of the mobile broadband is that the surfing speed is generally slow and the web sites that can be accessed with these devices are simple, as they have no audio, video, or cool graphics that are required to access internet and email at high speed. However, most cell phone carriers have come up with a technology that brings DSL-quality speed to all mobile device that are within the area that the cellular signal covers and this includes the laptops.
